About this placement
What is organised for students on commencement of placement?
Students will be assigned a mentor prior to arrival and will be orientated/inducted by this assigned mentor or a qualified mentor/assessor in his/her absence. In their first week of placement, students will be expected to work closely with their assigned mentor and will be supervised at all times. All team members will be introduced and their roles clearly explained. Opportunities to visit clients with the different members of the team will be offered to the students.

The shift patterns expected of the students will mirror our shift patterns with half an hour for lunch. However, we adopt a flexible approach of working to meet client needs. Such extra working time will be reimbursed at a later shift. Those students wishing to experience weekend shifts or the evening service district nursing shifts can certainly be accommodated but is not compulsory.
What patient care situations are available in this placement?
In line with the ever changing and complex needs of clients the placement experiences for the student will be extensively varied. For example, a single client can be seen for catheter, bowel and palliative care at one visit. We see clients for diabetic care, pressure area care, wound care, ear syringing, eye care and gynaecological care in addition, all at the home or in the clinic setting.
What nursing model is used for planning care?
In order to facilitate and implement a holistic approach to client care we use the Roper, Tierney and Logan model or nursing, with significant elements of Orem’s self-care nursing model to ensure independence and empowerment of this client.
What core clinical skills can be learnt?
A wide variety of core clinical skills can be learnt in the community setting to mirror, of course, the wide and general nursing role expected of district nurses in this era. Students can expect to learn and undertake skills involved in female cauterisation, administration of injections both subcutaneously and intramuscularly, removal of skin closures, knowledge and assessment of wounds and their appropriate application of dressings, skills involved in eye care, diabetic care and pressure area care will also be addressed to the appropriate student academic level.

What resources are available to help students learning?
The extensive skill mix of the district nursing team itself provide significant resources to enable the student to benefit from her/his clinical experience. Of course, in addition a substantial collection of evidence and educational material in the forms of journals, text books and videos are held in the clinical placement setting. Furthermore, the opportunity to experience observation of the range of multidisciplinary professions closely linked with district nurses is readily available and provides significant learning resources for the student(s).
What research and practice development activities are being undertaken?
Each member of the team is actively involved in service modernisation via benchmarking, evidence based practice, competency devising, clinical effectiveness planning and regular attendance at clinical supervision.
