What is organised for students on commencement of placement?

If you have been allocated this placement please contact them four weeks in advance of placement starting so they can confirm the arrangements with you.

Please download the Student Welcome Handbook prior to commencing placement.

Students are orientated to the hospice and the staff, Students are introduced to their mentor and their learning needs are discussed.

What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?

Students will be allocated a mentor prior to their arrival.

What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?

Early:

07:00 – 19:30

Night:

19:00 – 07:30

Shift Notes:

Students are asked to contact the placement if they are late or sick.

What patient care situations are available in this placement?

Patients are admitted for symptoms control, intermediate care and end of life care. Many patients are totally dependent on nursing staff for all their care. Students assist with the delivery of medication, admission and discharge procedures and care planning.

What nursing model is used for planning care?

Multi disciplinary team working with an allocated nurse – holistic care.

What core clinical skills can be learnt?

Students will be able to learn and develop clinical skills including the provision of physical, spiritual and psycho social care to patients. Assessing, formulating, implementing and evaluating individual care plans. Assisting in administration of controlled drugs and other medication.

What additional clinical skills can be learnt?

Assisting in setting up and administering drugs via a syringe driver. Care of the dying patient and procedures following death. Bereavement risk assessment.

What resources are available to help students learning?

There is a computer room.

What research and practice development activities are being undertaken?

Research into complementary therapies and audits on Integrated Care Pathways for Care of the Dying Patients, are ongoing, and students should ask about current activities when they come on placement.
