What is organised for students on commencement of placement?

  • Induction before placement
  • Contact from Wigan and Leigh Hospice via phone call or email
  • Induction week and ward tour on the first day
  • Introduction with Clinical educator
  • House keeping information such as meals and carparking
  • System One card provided if placement is longer than 6 weeks
  • Discussion with ward secretary regarding Identification information
  • Practice educators organised before commencing placement
  • Introduction from practice education lead/ Deputy ward manager, Rachel Shaw

What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?

Practice educators( assessors and supervisors ) allocated prior to starting placement and student informed.

What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?

3 Long days, 12 hours

Early shifts (06:30 hours) or Late shifts(06:30 hours) over 5 days.

Alternatively, mix of both shifts but ideally try to allocate long days.

11-hour Night shifts.

  • Dementia care/ Palliative care/ Heart disease
  • COPD management
  • Diabetes management
  • End of life care and bereavement
  • Dealing with difficult situations and enhanced communication
  • Education with Clinical educator and practice development team

What nursing model is used for planning care?

Lantern Model enabling Conversation.

Individual nursing models, Team nursing, Functional nursing care.

What core clinical skills can be learnt?

  • IV therapy, blood transfusion, Porta Cath lines and managing sepsis
  • Injection technique, drug administration, Peg feeding, Ryles tube
  • Wound care management, falls management
  • Hand washing and activities daily living
  • Observations
  • Blood sugar monitoring
  • Extensive pain management and symptom control
  • Aseptic technique
  • Catheterisation
  • Syringe pump management

  • Enhanced end of life care
  • Enhanced communication
  • MDT meetings
  • Links with funeral directors and arrangements
  • Dealing with difficult situations and assisting family support
  • Professionalism and providing own learning.
  • Extensive discharge planning
