About this placement
What is organised for students on commencement of placement?
Before you start your placement on HCU we would ask that you email the PELs (email link above) so that we could send you the welcome pack. You are expected to read it through before the start of your placement. This will give you a greater understanding of what is happening when you start on the ward.
We would also ask that you familiarise yourselves with the ward/trust policies prior to your first day.
What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?
All students are allocated an assessor but we would expect you to work alongside different members of the team in order to gain knowledge and to meet your learning outcomes.
What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?
Early:
7:30am – 20.00pm
Night:
19.30pm- 08.00am
Shift Notes:
The unit’s Placement Educational Leads prefer that students work the same 12-hour shifts as the nursing team but understand that this can pose problems. Any concerns with the 12 hour shift pattern can be discussed with your assessor or PEL.
What patient care situations are available in this placement?
HCU cares for patients with cardiac disfunction or disease. This includes myocardial infarction, angina, heart failure, arrhythmias, cardiogenic shock, myopericarditis and endocarditis. This will include short and long term management and treatment plans for patients.
There will also be the availability to observe pacemaker insertions, loop recorder insertions, transoesophageal echocardiograms, cardioversions as well as the recovery post procedure.
What nursing model is used for planning care?
None specific.
The Care framework is based around the Unit philosophy.
What core clinical skills can be learnt?
Blood pressure recording and general observations, ECG recording, cardiac monitoring skills, ANTT, infection control standards, person cares and communication skills.
Students can also observe/participate in the following skills as appropriate: venepuncture, cannulation, insertion of central lines, urinary catheterisation, intravenous drug therapy/infusions.
What additional clinical skills can be learnt?
Post angiogram and post procedure recovery,
Management of cardiac conditions
What resources are available to help students learning?
Learning packages and books, a library the internet and intranet. Continuing education sessions are facilitated on a regular basis.
What research and practice development activities are being undertaken?
Study by research team – Use of High Sensitivity Cardiac Troponin In Ruling Out Emergency Patients With Acute Myocardial Injury and Infarction
