About this placement

What is organised for students on commencement of placement?

Introduced to staff and ward. Shown where available resources are. Placed in Mentor team, then can begin working with Mentors in each area of the ward getting to know each area before moving on to the next. Given off duty.

What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?

Have team mentoring – mentors working in two teams Students placed in team 1 or 2

Shifts long days 0700 -1930hrs

Night shift 1900hrs – 0730hrs

7 day ward which is nurse led.

Students encouraged to complete night shifts.

What patient care situations are available in this placement?

We have 9 inpatient beds for patients who require overnight stays (i.e. for post procedure recovery, LTOT assessments, prep for procedures etc) 4 day cases beds for day case investigation (mainly GI) 11 chairs for people who have infusions such as immunoglobulin’s, blood, iron and people who require blood tests etc

Adaptation of Orem’s Model of Care

What core clinical skills can be learnt?

  • Clinical observations
  • Blood glucose monitoring
  • Post procedure recovery care

What additional clinical skills can be learnt?

  • Safe handling and disposing of cytotoxics.
  • Care of the sedated patients.
  • Administration of blood products.
  • Aseptic non-touch technique
  • Intramuscular and subcutaneous injections.
  • Making up infusions
  • Drug calculations
  • Admission of patients for various investigation.

Welcome pack contains information on infusions treatments proceedures etc.

18 in patients beds of which 6 are cardiology.

7 day case chairs. Approx 20 – 30 patients per day.
