About this placement

What is organised for students on commencement of placement?

Welcome pack. Ward induction. Spoke placements. MDT working.

What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?

All students will be allocated Practice Assessor and Practice Supervisor prior to commencement of your placement.

You will work with both your supervisor and assessor and will be given the opportunity to work with other members of the team as well.

What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?

Early 07:00-19:30 with two half hour breaks.

Night: 19:00-07:30 with an hour break.

What patient care situations are available in this placement?

Care of elective neuro and spinal surgery patients. Care of ENT patients. Care of patients stepping down from Critical Care. End of life care.

What nursing model is used for planning care?

An adaptation of Roper-Logan & Tierney’s Model for activities of daily living is used for assessing and planning patient care.

What core clinical skills can be learnt?

• Personal hygiene

• Admission assessments

What additional clinical skills can be learnt?

• Care of EVDs and lumbar drains
• ICP monitoring
• Tracheostomy care

• Assessing mental capacity
