About this placement

What is organised for students on commencement of placement?

  • 1st day: orientation to the Unit.
  • Meet assessors / co-assessors.
  • Plan timetable / learning needs for the first few weeks of placement.

What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?

Assessors and co-assessors are allocated prior to student arrival. Students can choose a mentor if they wish.

What patient care situations are available in this placement?

Caring for patients with Crohn’s disease, Ulcerative colitis, Vascular problems (including mesenteric infarction)and difficult Intravenous Access, Malabsorption problems (eg. coeliac disease), Radiation enteritis. Post operative complications, Nutritional assessment.

Students may be able to participate/observe a number of clinical skills, for example:

  • Admission / Discharge of patients
  • Aseptic technique
  • Total parenteral nutrition (TPN)
  • Care of stoma
  • Care of wounds
  • Nutritional Assessment and Support
  • Care of Vascular Access devices
  • Wound Management including Stoma Sites and open abdominal wounds.

Additional Information

The Intestinal Failure Unit (IFU) at Salford is one of 2 National Reference Centres (NRC) in the United Kingdom (UK).  The unit has 21 beds and is recognised nationally and internationally as patients are treated from across the UK & abroad.

The service covers the provision of specialised services for adults with type 2 and 3 intestinal failure (IF) and manages approx. 300 patients on home parenteral nutrition (HPN) in the North of England.  As a NRC the unit also has the responsibility to support other Integrated and HPN centres with specialist skills & knowledge.

The IFU has a dedicated multi award winning disciplinary team consisting of IF nurses, specialist consultants, IF physicians, surgeons, highly specialised dietitians, pharmacists and psychologists.

Part of the Ward Vision is: To have a relaxed, friendly & professional atmosphere, where the care provided will be patient focused & evidence based & we feel this also produces a quality learning environment.
