About this placement
What is organised for students on commencement of placement?
- Students are given an information booklet upon commencement of the placement.
- Orientation to the ward environment is given upon arrival.
- Learning opportunities and outcomes are discussed.
What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?
Student/Mentor allocation is arranged prior to commencement of the placement.
Team mentorship is practiced, students are allocated a suitable team member to work with in the abscence of their mentor.
What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?

Day Shifts:- 07.00am – 19.30pm
Night Shifts:- 19.00pm – 07.30am
3 shifts per week equalling 36 hours
In an 8 week period they will be required to work one week of 4 shifts to make up their hours
What patient care situations are available in this placement?
L7 also has the cohort area within the ward for patients being barrier nursed with clostridium difficile.
Patients present with various medical conditions, and due to the patient group often present with multiple pathology.
Patients often require management in confusion, dementia and delirium.
What nursing model is used for planning care?
In use is the Roper, Logan and Tierney activities of daily living model.
What core clinical skills can be learnt?
- Basic Nursing Cares, i.e eye care, mouthcare, attending to personal hygiene, continence care, pressure area care.
- Vital signs recording.
- Wound care and aseptic technique.
- IV fluid administration.
- O2 therapy.
- End of life care.
- Injection technique.
- Infection control.
- Drug administration.
- Interpersonal and communication skills.
- Nursing process.
- Discharge planning.
What additional clinical skills can be learnt?
- Actively working within the MDT.
- Enteral feeding.
- Management of diabetes.
- ECG recording.
- Management of patients with confusion, dementia and delirium.
- Care management in long term illness, exposure to continuing care assessments, capacity assessments, and best interests meeting.
What resources are available to help students learning?
- Time is given for students to access the library within the Mayo building.
- Link nurse information boards and additional resources within the ward environment.
- Consultant ward rounds twice weekly.
- MDT meetings once weekly.
What research and practice development activities are being undertaken?
Link nurses regularly attend study day sessions within their field.
Spoke Placements
- Opportunity to attend specialist clinics, i.e falls management / stroke clinics.
- Observe the work of the Palliative care team.
- Opportunity to spend time with various members of the MDT, i.e physio, OT, SW, district nurse liasion.
