What is organised for students on commencement of placement?

Students have an orientation pack.

What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?

Students have a named assessor on arrival in the ward.

What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?

Early:

Late:

Night:

Shift Notes:

Day shift:- 07.00 – 19.30

Night shift:- 19.30 – 07.30

The deficit in full time hours is made up with half a day which will be planned in the off duty on discussion with the mentor.

Care is delivered via Team nursing.

Students must contact the ward if late (report to nurse in charge on arrival) or unable to attend.

What patient care situations are available in this placement?

Management of respiratory disease, chronic confusion, cardiac disease, acute confusion, diabetes, wounds, continence, palliative care’ stroke, gastrointestinal disease, infection, renal disease, bone disease and neurological problems, dementia.

What nursing model is used for planning care?

Adapted Roper, Logan & Tierney Model.

What core clinical skills can be learnt?

Essential care skills; male and female catheterisation; pressure area care; wound care; intravenous fluids management; administration of medicines; communication skills. Insertion of nasogastric tubes and nasogastric/PEG feeds.

What additional clinical skills can be learnt?

Basic salt assessment; care of gastrostomy tubes; glucometer reading; neurological observations; subcutaneous fluids; use of IVAC and Graseby pumps; Tilt testing; IV AB’S; venepuncture; cannulation.

What resources are available to help students learning?

Student notice board; computers with database access. Hospital Intranet access. Resource room, British Journal of Nursing and Nursing Times.

What research and practice development activities are being undertaken?

Elderly care directorate is the pilot area for a 2 year project implementing an Electronic Patient Record. Essence of Care and National Service Framework for Older People.
