About this placement

What is organised for students on commencement of placement?

Please email the named contacts prior to phoning the department.

Learners receive an induction to the unit and a Welcome Handbook is given to them outlining what to expect from the placement

Learners are expected to complete a self assessment prior to their initial meeting with their assessor.

Learning outcomes, expected competencies, risk assessments, and additional learning needs will be discussed during initial meeting with assessor

Welcome Pack will be emailed out to students prior to placement commencing.

What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?

All assessors and supervisors are allocated prior to the students’ arrival in the unit. This will be emailed out to you once you make contact with placement. The welcome pack outlines the assessor role and the supernumerary status of the learner.

What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?

Shift Notes:

A wide range of shifts between Anaesthetics, Scrub and Recovery involving 3-day weeks and 4-day weeks, covering earlys and lates, and may also include working weekends.

Example of ‘long day’ shifts may include:

8.30-21.00

9.30-22.00

What patient care situations are available in this placement?

Learners will care for patients listed for elective and emergency surgery and will gain experience of all aspects of peri-operative care.

Learners will gain experience in anaesthetics, scrub and recovery, during various surgical specialities such as general surgery, urology, gynae, neuro, orthopaedics, trauma, dental, ENT, spinal and renal

What nursing model is used for planning care?

Nursing model based on Orem’s self care and patient centred pathways.

What resources are available to help students learning?

Learners receive a set of objectives for the placement in addition to their own.

There will be perioperative teaching sessions for you attend whilst on placement and other teaching sessions maybe available.

There is also an Education Room.

What research and practice development activities are being undertaken?

Research into patient warming aids, pain relief, and enhanced recovery assessment tool and theatre audits

Additional Information

The staff in theatres would like to extend our welcome to you. We will work hard to ensure your time with us will be both pleasant and instructive.  Staff will aid you in developing a sound knowledge base and practical skills that you can apply throughout your nursing career.

There are many opportunities within the department which will be beneficial for your future career. The theatre area is highly specialised and split in to 3 distinct areas

*            Anaesthetics

*            Scrub

*            Recovery

Your placement allocation will be divided into each area.

The theatre department is split over 2 floors (level 1 and level 3), and you will be expected to work on both levels. You will have been assigned an assessor and a supervisor, and they will be responsible for completing your documentation. As you rotate around the department you will be allocated a named staff member to work with within each specialty.

We aim at all times to promote an environment conducive to holistic wellbeing enabling a smooth and rapid return to the patient’snormal environmentwith no harm coming to the patient.

If you are pregnant, please contact the University Placements Unit as soon as possible as you will not be accepted for a placement in this area.
