About this placement

What is organised for students on commencement of placement?

Welcome letter, information pack about the ward, allocated a mentor before arrival and will have a weeks worth of off duty which is changeable.

What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?

We have team mentorship and will be introduced to your mentor on the first day.

What patient care situations are available in this placement?

  • Care of the acutely unwell patient.
  • Care of the terminally ill patient and patients undergoing chemotherapy treatments.
  • Managing side effects of chemotherapy’
  • Care of neutropoenic patients

What nursing model is used for planning care?

Roper, Logan and Tierney.

What core clinical skills can be learnt?

  • Manual blood pressures
  • Recording observations
  • Blood products and transfusions
  • Nutrition
  • Respecting dignity and privacy.

What additional clinical skills can be learnt?

  • About chemotherapy and its side effects.
  • The neutropenic patient and reverse barrier nursing.
  • Intravenous administration of treatments and medications.

What resources are available to help students learning?

There are computers on the ward to use for learning, the hospitals intranet, library on site.

We have books on the ward and a resource file plus all the staffs knowledge.

What research and practice development activities are being undertaken?

  • We have high impact audits for hand washing and peripheral cannula pathways and central line pathways.
  • Haematology Nurses help with the trials of chemotherapy.

Spoke Placements

  • To go to the out patients clinic with the Doctors.
  • To spend time (days) with the Haematology Specialist Nurses
  • To spend a morning in the blood bank watching a sample go through the process of being cross-matched.
  • To go to radiology with a patient who is having a groshong line insertion.

Additional Information

Some of our patients have Bone Marrows biopsies that can be watched and Peripherally Inserted Central Catheters can be observed whilst being put in, it does depend on which patients are on the wards at the time. Please ask questions of the staff we are happy to answer them if we can.
