About this placement

What is organised for students on commencement of placement?

Students will receive an orientation booklet prior to commencing placement.
Students are welcomed to the department, orientated and introduced to staff.
During the initial meeting with supervisors/assessors, individual learning needs will be identified and learning opportunities planned.

What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?

Students will be allocated a supervisor and assessor prior to commencing placement.

What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?

Early: 07:15-15:15
Late: 13:00-21:00
Night: 20:30-07:30
Long days: 07:15-21:00

What patient care situations are available in this placement?

The PANDA unit cares for children from birth to fifteen years with a range of minor to life threatening illnesses and injuries.

The aim of the unit is to care for children close to home and prevent transfers and admissions to other hospitals.

The unit works closely with the Childrens Community Nursing team, many of the children seen in the department are discharged home and their care continued in the community.

  • Observation of venepuncture and cannulation.
  • Performing ECGs and cardiac monitoring.

Additional Information

PANDA stands for Paediatric Assessment and Decision Area.

The department consists of a 5 seated minor injury bay and a 12 bedded observation area. Children can be cared for on the unit for up to 23 hours and 59 minutes before discharge or transfer to another hospital.
