About this placement
What is organised for students on commencement of placement?
Please download the Student Welcome Handbook prior to commencint placement.
1st years will have a chance to gain basic nursing care experience with HCAs and will work along side nurse in all tasks if appropriate
What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?
A Mentor and Associate Mentor will be allocated to the student in advance of them commencing placement.
Team mentorship approach – group work with all levels of MDT supported by mentor.
Arrangements will be made for the student to work the majority of their shifts with either their mentor or associate mentor.
What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?
Shift Notes:
Day 7am-7:30pm
Night 7pm-7:30am
What patient care situations are available in this placement?
Basic nursing care is routine for the ward ie: washing, dressing, continence care, nutrition and hydration
Students can attend courtesy calls in A&E and observe patients who are receiving Thromblysis
There are also opportunities for students to observe and practice enteral feeding, catheterisation and catheter care and pressure area care

What nursing model is used for planning care?
The Roper, Logan and Tierney Activities of Daily Living Model is used on the Unit
What core clinical skills can be learnt?
The core clinical skills that can be learnt on the Unit are:-
The taking and interpretation of clinical observations
Carrying out neurological observations, including Glasgow Coma Scale
Giving patient medications
Care planning
Documentation
Risk assessing
Admitting and discharging patients
Basic nursing care
Multidisciplinary team working
Consultant led ward rounds
What additional clinical skills can be learnt?
Additional clinical skills that can be learnt on the Unit are:-
Passing nasogastric tubes and managing enteral feeds
Catheterisation
Carrying out ROSIER assessments
Observing ward swallow screen assessments
Carrying out NIH assessments
Caring for the post thrombosis patient
What resources are available to help students learning?
The multidisciplinary team are a valuable learning resource on the ward
The hospital intranet is a useful source of information and there are many books and research files on the ward which will assist the student
What research and practice development activities are being undertaken?
There is a great deal of stroke research taking place at Salford Royal Hospital
There are Stroke Research Nurses who advise on the latest projects taking place, and can be accessed via the Hyper Acute Stroke Unit
