About this placement
What is organised for students on commencement of placement?
Please download the Student Welcome Pack prior to commencing placement
Orientation to the unit; students’ first day will coincide with their mentor’s off duty for the week
What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?
Team mentorship is in operation. Students will be allocated a lead mentor prior to commencing placement; please contact the unit not more than 2 weeks in advance of your placement commencing, to obtain your mentor’s name and off-duty.
What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?
Shift Notes:
Shift patterns consist of Long days and short shifts if required. To be discussed with Mentor if any concerns.
Long days- 07:00hrs – 19:30hrs
Nights- 19:00- 07:30hrs
What patient care situations are available in this placement?
Patients are admitted from A&E, G.P and booked in to a ‘HOT’ clinic to be assessed- This will offer a variety of learning opportunities. STU specialises in General surgical, gynaecology and urology patients.
What nursing model is used for planning care?
Orem’s model of care
This self-care deficit nursing theory is a grand nursing theory that was developed between 1959 and 2001 by Dorothea Orem. It is also known as the Orem’s Model of Nursing. It is particularly used in rehabilitation and primary care settings where the patient is encouraged to be as independent as possible
What core clinical skills can be learnt?
STU is a busy unit- Patients are admitted from A&E, G.P and booked in to a ‘HOT’ clinic to be assessed- This will offer a variety of learning opportunities.
STU specialises in General surgical, gynaecology and urology patients..
What additional clinical skills can be learnt?
You will be involved in the management of admissions and discharges on STU- You will undertake thorough assessments of patients and complete relevant documents to ensure safe practice.

You will be able to book on to spoke placements whilst working on STU. These would include:-
Theatre
Pain team (year 3 only)
Early pregnancy unit
Urology outpatients
A&E (for a short period) and work in the units HOT clinic.
