About this placement
What is organised for students on commencement of placement?
Students are allocated Mentor before starting placement.
First shift with support staff and initial paperwork and local induction complete.
Next shift with mentor.
Access to EPR documentation system arranged and training if not worked at Salford before
What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?
We ensure our mentors are compliant via annual updates and triennial reviews, and that the students will have access to their mentor for 40% of placement time. We also encourage students to work with other members of the team and to arrange appropriate spoke placements.
What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?
Shift Notes:
Long day – 07:00-19:30
Night shift – 19:00-07:30
What patient care situations are available in this placement?
Short stay Neurosurgical patients, including spinal – patients are generally mobile and self caring but required wound care and medication dispensing.
IV anti biotics and IV fluids are seen quite often.
Nurse led discharge for identified patients.
What nursing model is used for planning care?
Roper, Tierney, Logan.

NEWS.
Neuro observations.
Wound care – ANTT – infection control
Medication rounds
Communication skills
Pre-post-operative care – Vital signs
What additional clinical skills can be learnt?
Drain removal
Bladder scanning
ECG taking

Does this area have any suggested reading for a learner starting placement?
Prior to placement start date please email PEL’s and our orientation booklet and work booklet will be sent. This will provide an idea of the types of patients/ injuries that you will come across on the ward before you arrive.
