About this placement

What is organised for students on commencement of placement?

On your first day you will be introduced to the ward team and orientated to the ward. Learning opportunities and learning contracts will be discussed as will your paperwork completion. You will be given time to read this pack and meet your practice assessor or supervisor.

What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?

You will be allocated a supervisor but all the nursing team can support you with your learning. The Supervisors and assessors for this placement are:

What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?

Shift Notes:

Day shift:  07.00-19.30
Night shift:  19.00-07.30

Notes: Generally shifts are long days however if required Students can do short shifts.

What nursing model is used for planning care?

Model of Nursing & Organisation of nursing care

The model of nursing utilised on the ward is an adaptation of Roper, Logan & Tierney’s Activities of living. (Roper et al 1980)

Utilising the Nursing Process of assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation, nursing care is documented.

What core clinical skills can be learnt?

  • Clinical skills such as clinical observations completing early warning scores charts.
  • Familiarity with nursing documentation used on L8, including electronic patient documentation.
  • Basic understanding of fluid balance, intravenous therapy and nutrition.
  • Basic understanding of commonly used drugs within L8.

What resources are available to help students learning?

  • Ward team members including AHP’s, Medical staff, nursing practitioner
  • Patients and their significant others

Additional Information

Ward L8 is a twenty five bedded sub acute ward; it can have some acute medical patients but primarily patients are medically optimised and discharge planning of therapy intervention will be required.
