About this placement

What is organised for students on commencement of placement?

Shown around the department and introduced to staff.

To work with their Practice Assessor on their first shift and then to negotiate shifts with their Practice Assessor.

An area for bags and coats is shown to the student.

What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?

Regular training dates for new and experienced assessors are provided by the PEF Team.

There is also training available for new and experienced PELs.

The PEF Team also provide regular PARE training sessions which are delivered online for both staff and students.

The PEF Team will arrange bespoke training on any of the above.

What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?

8:00 to 21:00 with two 30 min breaks.

Twight 11:00 to 12md with two 30min breaks

Shift Notes:

Working the above shifts three times per week will only give you 36 practice hours. Therefore, you are required to work a make up shift. This can be done on an early or late shift but must be negotiated with your Practice Assessor. A hardcopy off duty is in the Student Pink File which is kept in the Manager’s office behind the Nursing Station. This off duty must be kept up to date and any changes must be authorised by the Manager, PEL or your Practice Assessor.

What patient care situations are available in this placement?

Patients present at the A&E department or are referred via domiciliary visits. If the condition is medical, then the patient is transferred to the SDEC department for review. There are a small number of beds on the SDEC unit for frail patients, but they are not kept over night on the department.

What nursing model is used for planning care?

Roper, Logan and Tierney.

What core clinical skills can be learnt?

Good communications.

Assessing.

Gaining information from the patient and relatives using open and closed questions.

Good organisation skills.

Awareness of policies and how to access them via the Intranet if unsure.

Able to work with other professions and follow instructions while remaining assertive to challenge any concerns.

What additional clinical skills can be learnt?

Venepuncture

ECGs

Cannulation

Urinary Catheterisation on both female and male patients

What resources are available to help students learning?

Internet, Intranet access and Wifi.

On site library

Free hospital transport to allow students to attend spokes on other sites.

The student can also spoke out to other areas connected with SDEC such as A&E, AMU and the medical wards. This gives the student a clearer understanding of the Patient’s Journey.
