About this placement

What is organised for students on commencement of placement?

Students are given an information and welcome pack on arrival, which includes information on ward philosophy.

They are expected to familiarise themselves with fire points/exits, crash trolley and understand and listen to the differences between emergency buzzers and patient buzzers.

What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?

They meet their assessors and orientate themselves to the ward.

What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?

Early:

Late:

Night:

Shift Notes:

Days – 07.00am – 19.30pm

Nights – 19.00pm – 07.30am

Early and late finishes can be discussed with your mentor if required.

What patient care situations are available in this placement?

Caring for patients with alcohol liver disease, alcohol withdrawal, high output stomas, bleeding oesophageal varices, cyclical vomiting syndromes, gastric ulcers and investigations of gastric problems. Care of G.I.T.

What nursing model is used for planning care?

Roper, Logan and Tierney Model of Nursing.

What core clinical skills can be learnt?

  • Admissions
  • Discharges
  • ANTT for IV’s and wound care
  • MDT meeting
  • Care of ascitic drains
  • Nasogastric /PEG feeds
  • Preparing patients for investigations
  • Vital observations
  • Total patient care.

What additional clinical skills can be learnt?

Attending investigations i.e. sigmoidoscopy, gastroscopy, colonoscopy, scans. Care of Patients with central lines in situ – for feeding.

What resources are available to help students learning?

Literature and learning packs.

What research and practice development activities are being undertaken?

Development of integrated care pathway for patient with ascites. Research based care plan development.
