What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?
Prior to attending placement, students will be allocated into a team containing 2 assessors and 2 supervisors.
What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?
The unit is open 7 days a week.
Mon-Fri 8-8:30
Sat 8-5:30
Sun 12:30-5:30 (Inpatient procedures only)
Learners are offered a choice of shift pattern either:
3 LD’s (8-8:30)
4 SD’s (3x 8-6, 1x 8-5:30)
Learners will be working 1 weekend out of 4.
Sickness: If you are unable to attend work due to sickness would you please contact the unit before 8.30am on 206-5959.
You must inform your University the dates of sickness and absence the unit will also liaise with the University.

Pre/intra/post procedure care of patients undergoing various diagnostic, therapeutic and emergency gastrointestinal procedures.

Endoscopy Unit Philosophy
On the Endoscopy Unit we aim to provide a happy and supportive team. All staff on the Unit are valued as individuals, regardless of band or status. An important aspect of our role is to provide optimal care and to enhance the quality of life for patients undergoing diagnostic or therapeutic endoscopy procedures.
We recognize the importance of providing care, which is evidence based to enable us to meet JAG guidelines. It is our desire to create a good learning environment for student nurses and recognize that we can all learn from each other using every opportunity to promote learning. We recognise that all patients are individuals and ensure that all religious and cultural beliefs are taken into consideration when visiting the Unit.
We endeavour to maintain the privacy and dignity of patients and guarantee confidentiality.
The Unit strives for excellent communication within the team in order to meet the holistic needs of the patient. We try and make patients feel welcomed and hope to create a pleasant, calm and friendly environment throughout their journey.
Overview of the Endoscopy Unit
The Endoscopy Unit is situated in the red area of the hospital near A&E, we are part of the medical services at Salford Royal Foundation Trust.
The Unit is made up of a 9 bedded admission and recovery area, 3 clinical procedure rooms and a decontamination room. There are staff toilets, kitchen and lockers available.
The 3 rooms run in correlation with each other continuously both morning and afternoon. A variety of Doctors carry out the procedures these include Surgeons, Medics,a Radiologist and a Nurse Endoscopist.
On the Unit we care for patients with a variety of conditions including:
- GI cancers
- GI bleed patients
- Crohns and ulcerative colitis
- Alcohol related/Liver disease
As a Unit we work closely with other members of the mulit-disciplinary team, including Radiology Staff and GI Specialist Nurses.
Whilst on the Unit students will have the opportunity to work with all other members to enhance their learning objectives.
