About this placement

What is organised for students on commencement of placement?

Student Induction and orientation to ward, assign a supervisor, follow their supervisors shifts where possible and enhance the learning environment of acute and general medicine.  Student packs with medical abbreviations and drug calculations.  To observe, learn and take part in nursing duties.

What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?

These will be assigned by the ward manager or ward sister

What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?

Shift Notes:

  • Early:                            07.30 – 15.30
  • Late:                             12.3 0- 20.30
  • Long Day:                     07.30 – 20.30
  • Night:                            20.00 – 08.00

What patient care situations are available in this placement?

Acute Medicine has a vast amount of different specialities:

Dementia, Mental Health, Elderly/Frailty, Gastro, Endocrinology, Cardiac, Respiratory, Step down from ICU.  On occasions we can have surgical outliers from Orthopaedics.

What nursing model is used for planning care?

Roper, Logan & Tierney – Activities of daily living, risk assessing

What core clinical skills can be learnt?

Catheterisation, Physiological Observations, ECG, Bladder Scanning

What additional clinical skills can be learnt?

Ng tube placement, NG Feeds
