Yi Wen Lim / WINNER

BA (Hons) Technical Theatre (Production and Design)

Yi Wen has excelled whilst on the Technical Theatre course; an exceptional achievement considering the majority of her studies were undertaken from her own country of Malaysia, during the height of the pandemic.

Yi Wen’s talents and ability have proven she is a true intuitive creative artist; an instinct honed further by her dedication and application to her studies. Her work combines a thorough understanding of play texts with strong influences of her own cultural heritage. She has also developed a fluent and inventive understanding of theatrical convention and style, most recently engaging with inventive design ideas to explore the city of Dublin, extracting key architectural and mapping details into a dynamic scenography. Beyond university, Yi Wen is involved in many theatre-based projects including shadowing designer Katie Scott and working on productions by the Manchester Malaysian Society. She is also a member of the Royal Exchange Young Company and will be undertaking work over summer with Walk the Plank on their ‘Green Space, Dark Skies’ project.

Yi Wen says “It has been an amazing opportunity to be able to immerse myself in a different culture and share my background and culture with my friends and tutors on my course. Being able to be recognised as an international student for this award is the most exciting bit of my learning experience here at Salford and I wish to be able to share more about my culture and learn about different cultures in the future.”
