Jardel Rodrigues / RUNNER UP

BA (Hons) English and Creative Writing

Since beginning his studies at Salford, Jardel has excelled in advancing his specialism of vibrant, edgy and technically accomplished performance poetry. Jardel is praised by his lecturers as “rapidly becoming one of the new voices of his generation” and was one of the six winners in the BBC’s Word First competition. This win was one of his crowning achievements during his time at Salford and has advanced his next steps towards launching an exciting professional career.

Jardel has been an active member, and ambassador, for the local performance poetry group Young Identity, based at the Contact Theatre and in residency at HOME. The group has been busy developing with their work for the Manchester International Festival, and has also been booked for the Fringe Festival at the English Shared Futures conference. Their success is in no doubt partly due to Jardel’s unique contribution which is also giving him an international profile, with a successful platform performance for the group in Berlin in 2019. Jardel is certainly one to watch.

Jardel says “It’s touching to know that the lecturers I have enjoyed learning so much from, with all of their knowledge, expertise and experience, recognise and appreciate the work that I do, even outside of university. I may not be the most academic of students, but I dedicate so much of my life, time and headspace to my craft that it often stresses me out. However, awards such as this make it worth the stress. To all of the staff who have ever taught me at Salford, thank you.”
