Sanny Rudravajhala / RUNNER UP

MA Journalism: Broadcast

Previous to starting the MA programme in Journalism: Broadcast, Sanny was a teacher with a side-line passion which he has taken from strength-to-strength during his postgraduate studies. His energy and keenness shine through in everything he does, with a constant desire to learn and improve. By the time he joined Salford, he had already established a radio station with council funding and secured a central role on the BBC podcast series ‘Out of Our League’, focusing on the trials and tribulations of Bury Football Club.

He has an exceptional willingness to help other students and all his nominations credited him for being an extremely likeable, enthusiastic and helpful student. Prior to one of the NCTJ (National Council for the Training of Journalists) professional exams, he created a podcast series outlining the key facts and issues, which he circulated to the whole group in order to help his fellow students understand the industry professional codes. His tutor, Debra Manley, described this as “the single most impressive act of academic generosity I have come across as a lecturer”.

Sanny says “I couldn’t believe it when I saw I had been nominated! There are so many brilliant students here and it’s been a privilege to work with them. So, to be shortlisted as a Create Student Awards finalist is an honour. I’ve had to make a lot of sacrifices to go back to university and it’s been tough with lockdown and having a young family as well. Being shortlisted is such a boost! It tells me I’m on the right track – the long hours, missing bedtime stories and spinning all the plates will all be worth it in the end!”
