Lee Ridley

MA Intelligence and Security Studies

Lee is credited by his academic team as a highly motivated, friendly and engaging mature student who has been part of the Salford community as a distance learner. Throughout his Masters degree, Lee has become a natural academic, balancing his studies whilst maintaining a busy career within the police. He contributes to and manages to stir lively discussions, while always remaining open and reflective on his own experiences.

His academic performance has been consistently excellent, using innovative methodology to achieve impressive marks in each of his academic assignments. Intelligence is a notoriously secretive industry and, therefore, a very difficult subject to research. However, this proved little challenge for Lee. In his impressive essays, he adopts a fresh approach to research that has rarely been utilised in intelligence scholarship – most recently focusing on undercover policing, which in itself is an under-researched subject. His performance whilst at Salford and dedication to his discipline have made a significant impact on all he collaborates with and we are proud to have him as part of our postgraduate student cohort.

Lee says “I’m incredibly proud to be shortlisted, and particularly grateful to Kyle Cunliffe for nominating me, for this amazing award. As a distance learning student at Salford, it can often feel that we are a little remote (not unsurprisingly!) from university life, so to be shortlisted for the Create Student Awards is particularly special for me. It highlights what distance learning students can achieve, and the contribution we can make to the University community in our chosen areas of study. Like many of those who undertake distance learning courses, I am coming to university a little later in life than most, which brings its own challenges – and sometimes advantages. The flexibility of both the University and teaching staff to allow people like myself to access education in this way is incredibly important. To be able to explore my subject and think creatively with the support, encouragement, and guidance of the fantastic staff at Salford throughout my time here has brought me huge professional and personal fulfilment. They have enabled me to excel in my studies and research and their amazing efforts are reflected in my success and shortlisting for this award – thank you so much!”
