Finding books in the library can be a little bit daunting, especially if you are new to an academic library. In this blog post, we will talk you through the easiest way to find the books you need for your studies.
Library Search is the portal into all of The Library’s print and electronic academic resources.
When you search for a book in Library Search, it will tell you if it is available electronically, in print or in both formats. If it is available in print, you will see a location, which tells you which library the book is in, and a subject number followed by some letters that appear under the title of the book you want to find:
This number and letter combination is the thing you need to make a note of, as it’s the information located on the spine of the book and it helps you find it. You can then go into the library and find the book using this (books are in numerical order).
We have thousands of books in the library, and so it’s nice to have an idea of where to start the hunt for your book! To pin-point exactly where your book can be found, read on!
Library Search has a built in ‘Locate’ function. When used, Locate generates a map of the library and pin-points exactly which floor in the library and which shelf it can be found on.
To use the ‘Locate’ tab:
1. First of all, look for the book you want in Library Search.
2. When you find the book you want, you’ll see a blue ‘Locate’ button below the title. Click this.
3. You will then be shown a map with the location of your book highlighted, so you know exactly where to find it!
Generating the ‘Locate’ map will also give you a shelf number which can help you spot the different shelves from far away, so you might want to make a note of that, too, before you start looking for the book, e.g.:
