Terrorism, Security, and Intelligence Studies alumna Noor Al-Naser tells us how mentorship from her tutor, Dr Anna Kruglova, led to a career-defining internship in Counter Terrorism at the UN—an experience that shaped her future. Now, Noor has returned to Salford to work alongside Anna, continuing their mentorship in a new way as colleagues and trusted friends.
How did you meet?
I met Anna back in 2021 when I was doing my MA in Terrorism and Security Studies. I was a new mum dreading the MA experience and having doubts about my ability to continue. She saw something in me and was extremely supportive. She guided me through my practice application and supported my efforts to obtain an internship at the UN Office of Counter Terrorism, which launched my career at the United Nations.
How has your relationship grown after uni?
Shortly after I graduated, Anna offered me a teaching opportunity at Salford to run the Middle East and Terrorism module at Salford. She is an incredible woman a talented scholar and a humble human being. I love her and respect her very much. Now she’s my supervisor in the Middle East and Terrorism module, she will be my PhD supervisor and we have become really good friends. She’s a big part of my life.
What’s your advice for finding a mentor?
Just go and ask and don’t be too hesitant to reach out to the faculty to guide you through difficulties. And put in good hard work—that’s what really matters!
Thank you to Noor for sharing your inspirational story of mentorship!
