I thought I would provide a little update on sport at Salford, and highlight some of the recent happenings on Campus.
Back in March, Team Salford facilitated and delivered our first ever Varsity event, and it was fantastic to witness so many students engaging in the event, even those who turned up purely to spectate! This illustrated the huge appetite for sport, and the power of sport as a prominent social vehicle to bring the campus together, which of course, is hugely illustrative of the broader “Community Campus” objectives of the ICZ. The character displayed, and engagement of the Salford students was a testament to the University, and we should all be really proud of everyone who participated, who helped provide such a positive reflection on the University of Salford, and the Team Salford University Sport Brand. Rachael Davies, our Sports Partnership Manager mentioned that the common consensus amongst the students was that “we smashed it!” – I certainly think that (unique!) student insight, illustrates how delighted we are with how things unfolded on the day.
We have the next intake of nursing students arriving next week, and we have a small surprise in store for them – weather permitting! One clue – Team Salford like to educate our students on the value of being physically active on a consistent basis, even if this is just a small commitment, and even better if you don’t realise you are doing it…. and that is all we are going to divulge for now!
The VC 5k Fun Run (in aid of Kidscan) is fast approaching, and we have some unique activities planned to help spotlight the event, and capture the prominent social value of participating, helping to raise money for a great cause. Students and Staff can sign up here BIT.LY/VCFUNRUN17 for just £8.00 and £10.00 respectively. The vision for sport at the University, certainly from our perspective, is to make sport (and physical activity in general) play an essential role within student experience, and the everyday lives of our students. We believe an active student population will give our students the greatest chance of excelling, both academically and in the subsequent professional avenues they choose to pursue. These unique engagement events such as the VC 5k Fun Run, help illustrate our commitment to making that happen, as we look to encourage mass participation within our student (and staff) population, and the subsequent participation pathways we look to provide.
One more area to mention before I sign off….we will soon have our own Team Salford Sport website page, which will be your point of reference for sport at the University. Pamela Cairns and her fantastic team in Marketing and External Relations have been busy building this for us, the initial plans look great, and we can’t wait to see what the finalised project looks like!
