For day four of ICZ month, we’re focusing on education and our partnership with Manchester Science Festival – the largest event of its kind in England.
As lead education sponsors of the festival we have the perfect opportunity to highlight the ongoing research and ideas of our academics across several subject areas – not just science! Lots of areas across the University are involved, including the Libraries team, the University Art Collection, the School of Arts and Media and more.
On 21 & 22 October we’re hosting GameLab at our MediaCityUK campus, where the public can interact and explore exciting areas of science. From controllable digital fish to the latest in virtual reality, eSport events, retro platforms and interactive VJ events, visitors will see first-hand how cutting-edge research in science, tech and media is changing the world.
Last year over 2,000 visitors, staff and students attended the Salford Science Jam exhibition at our MCUK campus. Events also took place off campus – including the Libraries team turning an empty retail space in Manchester Victoria station into a pop-up science library so people could engage with science while they waited for their trains.
The partnership provides invaluable opportunities for our students, including internships with the Museum of Science and Industry (MSI) in social media, press and technical teams during the festival.
MSI will also be attending future open days and welcome weeks to offer students an insight into what goes on in the museum. They’ll also offer free tickets, exclusive tours and training to students as prizes – and all staff and students get 20% off in the gift shop!
As part of this year’s festival we’re also working with VR Manchester, GM Higher and Salford Community Leisure to name just a few of the partners taking part.
