Aim

Small Grants

Grants are available to individuals, societies, associations or other bodies in the UK or Japan to promote and support interaction between the two countries. Grants can cover all fields of activity, including educational and grassroots exchanges, research travel, the organisation of conferences, exhibitions, and other projects and events that fulfil this broad objective. New initiatives are especially encouraged.

Foundation Awards

Awards are for collaborative projects that enable British and Japanese partners to work together, preferably in the context of an institutional relationship.

Foundation Awards can cover projects in most academic, professional, arts, cultural and educational fields. Awards seek to encourage the development and sustainability of UK-Japan partnerships between such organisations as museums and art galleries, theatres and performing arts groups, schools and universities, and grassroots and professional bodies. Any project which involves a significant level of collaboration between British and Japanese partners can be considered. 

Note: The Foundation Awards scheme does not support scientific collaborations, which are supported separately through the Royal Society-Daiwa International Exchanges Scheme (http://royalsociety.org/grants/schemes/international-exchanges/)

Designing a winning proposal

Target Audience: Academic and research staff new or to bidding for external funds or new to the university; beginner to mid-career level; suitable for colleagues who have previous experience of bidding but would like to refresh their bid writing skills or revise previously unsuccessful proposals.
Overview: This session will go through the entire proposal development process in detail, outlining the key points for effective bid writing, whilst taking into account relevant external research policies and the current funding climate. It will also outline the University’s internal approval and submission processes.We will also review evaluators’ comments from previous proposals, both successful and unsuccessful, in order to identify some key issues and areas for improving proposals. Finally, the session will provide tips for understanding Calls for Proposals correctly and for identifying the most relevant sources of funding for your proposed projects. Participants are encouraged to bring their own proposals, which they would like to revise / (re)submit.

This session will include:

  • Tips and key issues for improving bidding success
  • Processes and institutional support around bid submission and fEC costing methodology

Enhance your Impact – An Introduction to Technology Transfer

Overview: The impact agenda places an increased focus on translating research into product and services used in the broader economy. The University’s technology transfer office provides advice, support and resources to aid this process. This session will give an overview of the technology transfer process and the benefits it can bring. The two main routes to transfer technology – licensing and spin off company formation – will be discussed through real life examples. An overview of intellectual property protection and practical steps you can take to ensure you maintain the commercial value of your research will be given.

One to one clinics on the new EU HORIZON2020 research programme – what are the opportunities for you?

Overview: With the completion of the current EU research programme FP7 this year, HORIZON2020 will be most likely formally launched in November. Worth more than €70bn, HORIZON2020 is the key source of research funding in the EU and will offers opportunities for international research collaboration, delivering contract research for SMEs (similar to the KTP programme in the UK), European and international individual fellowships, individual grants and much more. These one to one clinics will provide an opportunity to explore the new research programme in more depth and to identify the funding opportunities and the right schemes for you and your research.

EU’s ERASMUS+ Programme

Overview: The EU’s Erasmus+ programme provides grants to foster collaboration, co-operation and mobility between education and training systems within the European Community.    This session will give the latest update on the successor programme for educational initiatives in Europe which will run from 2014-2020 and the multiple opportunities it presents for teaching, joint curriculum development and European collaboration.  The total budget for this period is € 16 billion.The session will provide an outline of the application process and University support for academics wishing to undertake collaborative projects. The final part of the session will be practical and will focus on: a question and answer session and a forum for new ideas or draft projects you wish to bring along to the session.

EU’s new research programme: HORIZON2020

Research Publication Completion Retreat: bring a draft; take home a submission for publication
Trainer: A three day writing retreat, led by Professor Brenda Cooper

Venue: Think Lab, Maxwell Building (March 2014), Derwent Room, University House (July 2014)
Target audience:  Academic staff who are currently working on a research paper. Open to all disciplines and all career stages, from lecturer to professor levels. The main criterion for selection, however, is the potential of the paper to benefit from the collaboration of colleagues across the disciplines. Papers should, therefore, be appropriate for fellow academics from a broad range of fields to follow and comment on.
Overview: Following the success of the recent research completion workshops held at the University of Salford, academic staff are invited to take part in a three day writing retreats in March and July 2014. The retreat is dedicated to the completion of a designated work-in-progress. It provides colleagues with space outside of work to devote to completing this work and a valuable opportunity to receive feedback from peers and from Prof Brenda Cooper.Participants circulate a draft of a work-in-progress paper with the group prior to the retreat, and each participant then acts as a discussant on one colleague’s paper. During the retreat, the group will explore the nature of producing knowledge in different research fields, before presenting their papers and receiving feedback from their assigned discussant and the facilitator. There will also be dedicated time to revise the abstracts of the paper in light of discussions, and to share these revisions. Following the retreat, participants are able to send a revised version of their paper to Brenda for a follow up one-to-one discussion and feedback session.The outcomes of the workshop are as follows:1.       In the short term, a paper will be completed for submission for publication2.       In the longer term, participants will have a clearer idea of their research plan and focus3.       Participants will experience the benefits of collaboration in what can often be a solitary process of research and writing.
