Are you involved in EPSRC funded research?

5 May 2015

The EPSRC has made changes to its grant requirements. As of the 1st May 2015, both the University and its researchers are required to adhere to a set of expectations with regards to research data management.

All University of Salford researchers and research students funded by EPSRC are expected to:

  • Ensure that your digital research data is securely stored and managed during a project.
  • Create a metadata record describing your research data within 12 months of the data being generated and, if it is digital data, include a persistent identifier
  • Ensure that your digital research data is securely preserved and made accessible for a minimum of ten years, in a suitable data repository, once your project has finished. You may delay providing access to your data if this is necessary to protect intellectual property. Only in exceptional circumstances should your data not be made accessible and this must be agreed with the EPSRC, preferably at the beginning of the project.
  • Non-digital data must be stored in a manner that will facilitate access, should a request to access it be received.
  • Include a statement within published research papers describing how and on what terms any supporting research data may be accessed
  • Ensure any resources associated with research data management are included in your data management plan and in your EPSRC grant application.

For more details about the EPSRC expectations see our website: http://www.salford.ac.uk/research/research-data-management/funder

The University is developing the services, policies and support that will enable researchers to meet these expectations. This includes providing secure storage to host large data volumes, a collaboration space, a source code repository, and a data repository with the ability to create Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs).  An updated website, enquiry service and training sessions are also being developed. We expect these to be available by autumn 2015. However, we have made interim arrangements and if you are publishing papers, or need any assistance in the meantime, please contact Hannah Baker, Research Data Manager, ext. 56707 or h.baker@salford.ac.uk read more

Important notice for EPSRC-funded researchers

13 March 2015

EPSRC-funded researchers should be aware that if you are writing/submitting research papers which acknowledge EPSRC funding for publication on/after 1st May 2015 you MUST include a data access statement to enable compliance with new EPSRC expectations. This statement should include a persistent URL directly linking to the dataset or to supporting documentation that describes the data in detail, how it may be accessed and any constraints that may apply.

EPSRC will be auditing papers which acknowledge their funding to check that they include a data access statement and where this is missing, or if there are problems accessing the data, they will follow this up with the PI and could impose sanctions. read more

Research Data Management Survey: Your views are needed!

3 July 2014

The University of Salford recognises the importance of the data generated through our research activities, and is working to improve the way in which research data is securely managed and shared.

As part of this work the Library are conducting a survey of researchers to help them understand current practice surrounding the management of research data. It is critical that they hear from as many researchers as possible, as the results of this survey will inform the development of the infrastructure, support services, and policies that we hope will benefit you. The more information they receive about your research data, the more they can tailor the Research Data Management Service to your specific needs. read more
