Oliver Thorpe – Runner Up

BA (Hons) Journalism: Broadcast

Oliver has been a model student in every sense. He has been involved in a wide range of industry-based projects, working with the Belfast Newsletter, BBC Sport Northern Ireland, Manchester Evening News, the England and Wales Cricket Board (Reporters Network) and Wisden Cricket. In addition to volunteering at University Open Days, Oliver has also been the Sports Editor of student-run website Salford Now for two years running, managing and commissioning sports content produced by fellow students. Oliver’s pursuit for professional opportunities is credit to his persistence, politeness and professionalism. Robin Brown, Lecturer in BA (Hons) Journalism, describes Oliver as “an exceptional student, one the University will rightly hail as an alumnus for years to come, and on whom we can count to represent Salford as a superb ambassador now and in the future.”

Oliver says: “For me, it is a huge honour to be shortlisted for the Journalism, History and Politics Award. The standard of work produced by my year group is incredibly strong. As well as being top team players, there is a lot of competition and we often push ourselves to be the best we can. To be recognised in this strong cohort is special. Following three years of hard work both inside and outside the classroom, I feel that I am in the best possible position heading into the industry. This couldn’t have been possible without the first-class support of my peers and all the Journalism staff. I spent two of my three years as Sports Editor at our in-house news organisation, Salford Now. During this time, I covered several local clubs including Lancashire Cricket Club, Sale Sharks, Salford City and Salford Red Devils. In 2019, I was fortunate to cover Salford City at Wembley as they gained their first promotion to the Football League and Salford Red Devils’ first Super League Grand Final with 64,000 people inside Old Trafford. I also wrote reports from the ICC Cricket World Cup and the Ashes – allowing me to mix with journalists from all over the world! I am leaving with life-long friends, a strong contact book and plenty of memories.”
