Our inpatient team is based in the Diabetes & Endocrine offices. They are at Salford Royal in the Ladywell building. (Opposite ward L1)

What is organised for students on commencement of placement?

First year students: We will provide all new starters with a starter pack and a timetable. Your timetable will allow you to observe the range of services we offer for our patients.  You meet your assigned assessor or supervisor on the first day.

During your placement your assessor will also discuss a Quality improvement project to work on as part of encouraging independence and self-directed learning

Second year students: As above

Third year students: n/a at this time we do not have third years on placement with us

What are the arrangements for assessors/initial supervisor?

Will be arranged during initial meeting

What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?

As part of your learning, you will be allocated 7.5-hour shifts Monday – Friday this will be between the hours of 0800-1700.  The assessors/initial supervisor will provide you with a timetable which will state the exact start times on each day.

What patient care situations are available in this placement?


We are a specialist diabetes service providing care for both in-patients and out-patients. 

In-patient setting: Reviewing ward patients who have been admitted due to a diabetes emergency ( DKA, hypo etc) or who have been admitted for reason other than their diabetes but the blood glucose control has become problematic during the admission.  Education of ward staff to enable them to care for people with diabetes effectively.

Out-patient setting: Education sessions for people with diabetes (type 1 & type 2) giving them skills to self-manage their diabetes, Out-Patient clinics (general/young person/ type1/pump/Libre) to support patients through assessment , education & titration of treatments to improve glucose control.

What core clinical skills can be learnt?

The Learner will learn how diabetes can affect the individual; what treatments are used and why, how self-management of the condition impacts on the individual, how other conditions can impact on the glucose control.

The Learner will be able to observe / take part in the following clinics and education courses: Diabetes basics, Diabetes x-pert, Insulin group start, GLP-1 start, DAFNE, General diabetes clinic, Consultant Clinics, Foot clinic, Libre start, Pump clinic, Carb counting, New type one diabetes clinic, Joint renal diabetes clinic, Young person clinic, Dietitian lead clinic and Pre- pregnancy clinic. They will also work with the DSNs in the hospital and have the opportunity to observe the management of diabetes in an acute setting this will include management of diabetic emergency’s such as DKA & HSS

At the introductory meeting with the assessors/ supervisor Skill both the clinician and the student will work together specific to identify specific goals/skills to Learn as per PARE document.
