What is organised for students on commencement of placement?

Please download the Student Welcome Pack prior to commencing placement.

What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?

All fully qualified mentors/assessors, informed of mentor via post before commencement of placement, all shifts covered by mentor and student together so student exposed to 24hour care.

Mentor groups used on CCU so 24 hour access to a mentor at all times.

What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?

Early:

7:30am – 13:45pm

Late:

13.45pm – 20.00pm

Night:

19.30pm – 08.00am

Shift Notes:

Long Day:- 07.30am – 20.00

Long days not encouraged due to student commitments (course work etc) students encouraged to cover all 24hours care including weekends/nights.

What patient care situations are available in this placement?

What nursing model is used for planning care?

Roper, Logan and Tierney

What core clinical skills can be learnt?

Venepuncture, cannulation, ECG, Medicine Administration, Critical Care Observation Skills, IV fluids/medication, Blood sugar, Monitoring, Basic life support.

What additional clinical skills can be learnt?

Diabetic management, communication skills with regards to the Cardiac Patient, CPR, exposure to central line insertion, care of Angiography Patients, Pacemakers/ICD Insertion, Pacing Las, PPM, ICD’s, Bi-vent – ICD, Implantable loop recorders, Cardioversions

What resources are available to help students learning?

Full extensive cardiology library, learning package, library on site at the hospital, excellent knowledgeable staff.

HUB And SPOKE Package.

What research and practice development activities are being undertaken?

Currently updating learning packages covering all areas of cardiology, MINAP. Changes in Cardiology, Cardiac Rehabilitation, ECHO (Cardiorespiratory dept, Physio, Heart Failure Chest Pain Assessment Nurse, Diabetic Nurse.

Spoke Placements

We have a full hub and spokes programme, consists of diabetes specialities, heart failure nurse, cardiac rehabilitation, physiotherapy, Manchester Royal Infirmary (angiography, ICD insertion etc).

Additional Information

CCU is an 10 bedded critical care unit caring for the Cardiac Care Patients and their associated problems. Students will be exposed to patients with gross heart failure, cardiogenic shock, acute myocardil infection, insertion of pacemakers, arrhythmias.
