About this placement

What is organised for students on commencement of placement?

The Clinical Educator for Paediatric Theatres is responsible for the induction of students to their clinical placement and ensuring that students have knowledge and understanding of trust policies.

Mentors are allocated to students and this process is supported by the Clinical Educator. Liaising with other MDT to arrange spoke placements and working closely with the PEF team to support students during their placement.

Monitoring and recording sickness/absence and liaising with the universities and personal tutors.

Induction Day:

  • discussion of trust policies, orientation to the area, health and safety, theatre practices and discussion of PAD
  • Meeting mentors where possible
  • Student booklet listing all contact numbers and general information about the department
  • A visit to the trust library, a tour around and registration
  • Weekly allocation sheets listing the theatre practitioner/mentor that the student is going to work with everyday
  • Car parking/name badges organised

What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?

  • Allocation of mentor to assessor is e-mailed out before student placement
  • Clinical Educator available for advice and support
  • Yearly mentor updates available and mentors encouraged to attend

Whilst in theatreyou will have a team approach to mentoring to give a balanced view of the totalexperience. You will be allocated a Primary Mentor, who is responsiblefor completing all necessary paperwork. It is important that you stay with yourallocated practitioner. In each area an experienced practitioner will supportyou. You may not be working with your Mentor on a daily basis but they arepresent in the department if you have any questions. A communication tool willbe used for giving feedback to your primary mentor.

What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?

Early:

08.00am-18.00pm

Late:

12.00 – 21.30pm or 11.30 – 21.30

Night:

21.00 – 08.30am

Within Paediatric Theatre our shift pattern is over 4 days

On your first day please report to paediatric theatre reception located on the first floor of the Children’s Hospital at 08.30.

Please bring a padlock and key as  you will be provided with a locker

What patient care situations are available in this placement?

  • Anaesthetics: pressure area care, airway management, drug calculations
  • Scrub: infection control, maintaining patient safety and dignity while anaethetised
  • Recovery: Observations, nursing care, interaction with parents and MDT, Pain management

What nursing model is used for planning care?

  • Adapted model in recovery
  • Patient intra operative pathway

  • Patient safety- safe site surgery/team briefing

  • Trust library providing on line resources as well as a wealth of journals
  • Computer access in theatres
  • Seminar room with powerpoint facilities
  • Resus simulations with Dr Mckinnon consultant anaesthetist
  • Wealth of knowledge shared by paediatric surgeons and anaethetists during students clinical placement
  • Teaching sessions formal/informal
  • Theatre shared drive accessible from all computer within theatre.  Teh shared drive contains presentation, videos, standard operating procedures and speciality theatre information

What research and practice development activities are being undertaken?

  • Research placement spoke available with the research team
  • Spoke with Pre Admissions Team available
  • Safe Site Surgery/Team briefing (WHO/NPSA)
  • Spoke with pain team available

This enables the student to follow the preoperative process.

Additional Information

If you are pregnant, please contact the University Placements Unit as soon as possible as you will not be accepted for a placement in this area.

Students will be provided with clogs to wear in theatre and theatre scrubs. However please wear your uniform on induction day as we will be visiting various departments in the trust.

You may be asked to wear your uniform on other days if we are visiting different areas or you have a spoke placement.
