Student induction Timetable

An initial meeting with the clinical development nurse, allocation of a mentor and a familiarisation and induction to the Spinney Hospital.

What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?

All clinical areas have a number of trained mentors who regularly update themselves.

Mentors and students work closely together although there will be occasions when your mentor will be working a different shift. However, you will never be unsupervised and left unsupported and another member of staff will be appointed to support you.

What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?

Early:

07.30 – 13.50

Late:

13.15 – 19.50

Night:

19.30 – 07.50

What patient care situations are available in this placement?

With supervision and consent you should be able to engage in the full range of patient care situations from attending meetings, to planning care, liaisng with other disciplines, and implementing assessment & treatment.

What nursing model is used for planning care?

We take a holistic approach to care. No particular model is used. Our care is structured by the CPA framework.

What core clinical skills can be learnt?

  • Interpersonal skills
  • Medication administration
  • Report writing
  • Enhanced communication
  • Observation

What additional clinical skills can be learnt?

Experiencing clinical work within a MDT framework. The challenge of working with a challenging patient group and the complexities involved. Advocating for patients, interprofessional liaison and practice.

What resources are available to help students learning?

  • Clinical development nurses
  • Mentors Resource room with specialist reading material
  • Internet access
  • A committed and dedicated workforce.

What research and practice development activities are being undertaken?

We are currently expanding our service to include a mental impairment/personality disorder ward as well as a learning disability service. Much of our efforts are directed towards these enterprises.

Possibly Kemple View near Blackburn. Internally you will have opportunity to spend time in other departments such as psychology and OT.

Additional Information

Elysium Healthcare (The Spinney) require all students to attend Mandatory security and breakaway training prior to going into clinical areas.   Please contact your personal tutor in order to request permission for you to attend if you are in University on any of the dates of training. – Please be aware that this training will more than likely be at  Arbury Court, Warrington

You will also be required to complete a health questionnaire prior to the training and this will be issued to you by the Placement Education Lead.
