What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?
Students will be allocated to a mentoring team before arrival.
We aim to have each student work with RGN’s within their allocated mentoring team.
All RGN’s within each mentoring team will have access to PARE and are at supervisory level.
Most mentoring team leaders are at assessor level.
Ongoing off duty will be completed by your mentoring team leaders once placement has started.

What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?
Early:
07.30 until 15:30 ( 30min break )
Late:
12:00 until 20:00 ( 30min break )
Night:
19:30 until 08:00 ( x2 30min breaks )
(requires 5 hour make up shift per 4 week period)

What patient care situations are available in this placement?
In A+E you can expect to see a wide variety of presentation. You will learn from patient care situations involving acute medical patients with multiple presentations from myocardial infarction (MI-Heart attacks), Gastrointestinal bleeds (GI bleeds), seizures, severe abdominal pain to cerebrovascular accident (CVA-Stroke) down to the walking wounded, minor injuries and ongoing chronic health complaints.
Increasingly we are seeing high numbers of patients with Mental Health issues which allows for student learning opportunities and exposure to mental health field of practice whilst on A+E placement.
What nursing model is used for planning care?
A to E emergency assessment of care (Airway/Breathing/Circulation/Disability/Exposure)
Additionally we are increasingly using Activities of Daily Living (ADL’s) based assessments, This is to plan care for patients who have been stabilised and require admission for ongoing care.
What core clinical skills can be learnt?
Hand Washing
ANTT – key parts/sterile field
BLS Basic Life Support – oropharyngeal airways (OPA), nasopharyngeal airways (NPA), bag valve masks (BVM),
CPR – compressions, scribing, observations, gain knowledge around cardiac drugs used
ECG – Electrocardiogram – to detail the electrical activity in the heart.
Nutrition – IV fluids/PEG feeds
Tissue Viability – Pressures soars and initial actions taken in A+E to prevent pressure damage.
NG – nasogastric tube insertion
Skills will be picked up PRN as and when circumstances dictate due to the unpredictable nature of A+E
