About this placement

What is organised for students on commencement of placement?

Off duty, welcome pack and learning objectives will be provided prior to start of placement.

Goals and objectives discussed at initial interview.

Orientated to the clinic environment, introduced to the staff on duty and to the assessor and/or supervisor assigned to support you if on duty.

What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?

Assessor & Supervisor will be allocated via PARE pre-placement

Both Assessor & Supervisor will be copied into learners initial email to ensure point of contact pre-placement

Leaners will be allocated to work with all members of the MDT as appropriate including healthcare support workers, junior doctors & consultants

SPOKE visits will provide exposure to other MDT members including Physios, Radiotherapy Clinicians, Surgical Care Practitioners etc.

What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?

Shift Notes:

Monday – Friday 8-6pm x3 with 1x 8-5:30pm session

Options to spread over 5x days- reasonable adjustments can be discussed at initial interview

No weekends/Bank Holidays

  • Communication Skills – including breaking bad news
  • Information gathering & provision tailored to patients specific needs
  • Aseptic non-touch technique
  • Urinalysis & interpretation
  • Administration of medicines including injection technique
  • Basic Clinical Observations

What additional clinical skills can be learnt?

  • Male & Female Catheterisation
  • Intermittent self-catheterisation patient tuition
  • Uroflowmetry & post void bladder scanning including interpretation
  • Intravesical Therapies
  • Taking urological histories
  • Assisting with procedures ; prostate biopsies, cystoscopy & urodynamics
  • Phlebotomy & Blood Glucose Monitoring (year & trust training dependent)

Additional Information

Leaners will be expected to be capable of independent learning & proactive in finding opportunities to meet their required proficiencies. We would encourage pre-reading of clinics & expect interactive discussions with the clinical practitioners. We would encourage learner reflection & aim to provide contemporaneous feedback throughout the placement.

Due to the high volumes of learners (all disciplines) we have requested only 1x nursing learner at a time.
