About this placement

What is organised for students on commencement of placement?

Orientation & Induction

Each student will be provided with:
1. An induction booklet via email + evaluation of student placement
2. An orientation tour of the Interventional Radiology department, departmental staff including assessor and supervisor and other members of the multidisciplinary team.
3. Work booklets to various radiology departments via email
4. For third year students, you will receive a traffic light coded list of part 3 proficiencies to enable you plan for proficiencies that will be unachievable within the Radiology department.
5. Learning resources available- on the internet and within the department
Before a student starts placement within Interventional Radiology, we expect the following to be completed:
1. Self-Assessment
2. Ring a week in advance for telephone induction

What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?

A system of Team Mentorship operates, in which each student will have a named assessor and supervisor, but also be supported by the other qualified mentors within the radiology department.

What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?

Shift Notes:

Students work either between 08.00 – 18.00 x 4 or 8am – 4pm x 5 days per week, Monday – Friday

What patient care situations are available in this placement?

Each student can become involved in the following patient care situations commensurate with their stage of training:
• Assessment of patients prior to radiological interventional procedures. The Pre-assessment on the ward includes accessing EPR and patients’ medical notes, physical and psychological health, drug interaction and requesting bloods.
• This is where a detailed explanation of the various procedures to the patient and/or their relatives can be delivered.
• Further assessment will also be carried out on arrival in the department, with particular attention, to patients general condition and informed consent and also their blood results.
• Planning of individual care taking into consideration each patient’s physical condition, co morbidities, infection status etc and their effect on placement on the interventional list and the running of the interventional lists.
• Provision of Care within legal and ethical boundaries which promotes client interest and confidentiality. In addition, assessing with positioning and monitoring of patients and preparation of sterile trolleys.
• Participation in the evaluation and summarisation of care.

What nursing model is used for planning care?

The Nursing model of care is based on Roper, Logan & Tierney framework.

What core clinical skills can be learnt?

• IMER- Radiation Protection
• Hand washing- 8 steps of ANTT
• Moving and Handling
• Prevention of infection/cross infection
• Systemic observation, including blood pressure, pulse oximetry, respiration rate, ECG monitoring
• Blood glucose testing
• Record keeping including Radiology Patient Pathway, clinical notes, and electronic clinical notes.
• Participation in patient handover to ward nurses and carers
• Risk assessment both risk to patient and the risk the patient poses to others e.g., infection status, aggressive etc. Environmental risk slips, trips, falls.
• Pain management
• Medicines- Knowledge of drugs commonly used in radiology and their interaction with other drugs the patient may be prescribed, their contraindication and half-life e.g. anticoagulation, Tinzaparin half-life of 12 hours. Administration of IV drugs. Common drugs used include iodine-based contrast, midazolam, opiates, and antibiotics
• Allergies and their implications e.g. Latex, iodine etc. Prioritising and planning care, time management skills.
• Case management skills
• Negotiating care with patients and carers
• Managing diversity, religious, spiritual, and linguistic
• Quality assurance-complying with process, policies, and procedures
• Understanding 24/7 IAT service

What additional clinical skills can be learnt?

• Initiating, maintaining, and terminating therapeutic conversations
• Assessment of patients prior to interventional procedures, anxiety management techniques
• Managing patients’ refusal of treatment
• Problem solving and decision making e.g., patients’ fitness for interventions, patient consent, patients advocacy
• Searching, analysing, and implementing evidence-based practice
• Working as a team member alongside, medical staff, radiologists, radiographers, ward staff and other members of the multidisciplinary team
• Ensuring personal safety regarding radiation safety
• Aseptic technique including sterile trolleys, central lines etc
• Scrub skills using specialist angiographic catheter and guide wire equipment.
• Opportunity to handle a variety of specialist equipment such as wires and catheters
• Promoting health and wellbeing of clients e.g. advising on dietary preparation prior to the intervention and post care management of radiologically inserted gastrostomy.
• Opportunity to participate in the running of interventional lists and supervising and teaching of carers
• Handling emergency procedures and events
• Observation and participation of care of patients undergoing nephrostomy, fistula-angioplasty, radiological insertion of gastrostomy, arthrography and neuro-vascular treatment of aneurysm and arteriovenous malformation

Opportunities for personal and professional development include participation in various audits, CPD sessions and working with link nurses within the department.
