About this placement
What is organised for students on commencement of placement?Students are asked to email the department rather than ring as the person you need to speak to may not be available.
Upon contact via email, the placement contact will allocate your assessor/supervisor and send you all information needed before start of placement.
General orientation, overview of the practice area, including a welcome pack (emailed before starting).
Introductions to named mentoring team, other staff and explanation of differing roles.
Allocated time for initial meeting/orientation.
What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?
Once students have been allocated to our unit we will assign them to a mentoring team where he/she will have a number of nurses (maximum of 4) to work with, all offering various knowledge and skills and experiences including cardiology/diabetes/respiratory/drug and alcohol misuse
What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?
Early:
07.00 – 13.30
Late:
13.00 – 19.30
Night:
19.00 – 07.30

What patient care situations are available in this placement?
Care of the acutely ill patient who requires assistance with activities of daily living.
Care and assessment of patients with various medical conditions, surgical complaints, neurological complaints, care of patients referred from A & E, outpatient clinics and/or Gps.
What nursing model is used for planning care?
Roper, Logan and Tierney Model of Nursing
What core clinical skills can be learnt?
- Drug calculations/administration
- Recording and interpreting clinical observations.
- Record keeping
- Infection control
- Specimen collection/testing
- Catheterisation
- Acute fluid management
- Wound care
- Tending to patients basic nursing needs; such as personal hygiene, dietary, communication.
- Assessment and holistic care delivery
What additional clinical skills can be learnt?
- Recording ECG’s
- Rapid Assessment and implementation of care
- Management of the acutely unwell adult and cardiac monitoring depending on the level of experience and policy

- Various audits – Infection control, documentation, falls management and reduction, NAAS.
- Sepsis 6 bundle, Acutely unwell adult collaborative including clinical observations
