About this placement

What is organised for students on commencement of placement?

Please download the Student Welcome Pack prior to commencing placement.

Learners will have opportunity to spend time with different teams within the integrated respiratory team. A timetable is planned prior to starting the placement. Learners are also encouraged to arrange any specific spokes that they wish to do during their time with the respiratory team.

On your first day of placement, learners will be introduced to the team and orientated to the placement environment.

What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?

Named assessor and supervisor will be assigned on PARE prior to starting placement

Shift Patterns

The working day is 8:00 – 16:00 or 09:00 – 17:00 depending on the team you are working with. Long Days 7:00-19:30 are available when working with the acute NIV team.

On your first day, you will be introduced to the team and will plan your timetable and discuss your learning outcomes with your mentor.

Report to the respiratory nurse offices each morning to meet up with the relevant team unless attending a clinic.

What patient care situations are available in this placement?

The Integrated Respiratory Team comprise a number of different teams that provides expert care to patients both within the hospital setting and community setting living with a wide range of different respiratory conditions:-
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
Asthma
Bronchiectasis
Interstitial Lung Disease
TB
Lung cancer
Obesity Hypoventilation Syndrome
Obstructive Sleep Apnoea

What nursing model is used for planning care?

The philosophy of the team is to identify the patient’s baseline and to then plan care that enables the patient to remain as independent as possible.

What core clinical skills can be learnt?

Manual observations – blood pressure, pulse, respiratory rate, temperature and oxygen saturations.

Communication skills

What additional clinical skills can be learnt?

Specialist holistic assessment of respiratory patients

Chest auscultation – *bring your own stethoscope*

Capillary blood gas testing and interpretation of blood gasses

Chronic disease management

Non-invasive ventilation (NIV)

Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP)

Advanced care planning

Oxygen therapy

Inhaler technique

Spirometry

Students are given every opportunity to practice clinical skills by actively participating in all aspects of patient care

To participate in chest auscultation please bring your own stethoscope
