Teifi James

BA (Hons) Television and Radio Production

Alongside her studies, Teifi has contributed massively to the growth of the BA (Hons) Television and Radio Production’s speech-based radio station, Utter Radio, as an incredibly proactive Station Manager since 2020. She has been responsible for overseeing the recruitment of new presenters and producers, managing a team of schedulers and social media contributors, whilst developing all automated and live output. Teifi has been extremely dedicated to her studies and the station throughout her degree. During her first year, she co-organised a very successful five-hour speech-based General Election Result programme with coverage from the 10pm Exit Poll through until 3am. Managing Utter Radio is huge task yet she has undertaken this with great humour and professionalism, despite having already secured a demanding position as Studio Director at BBC 5 Live.

As a hearing-impaired student, Teifi has harnessed her unique insight and appreciation of audio to generate engaging and inventive content for the station – not least through her podcast ‘Disabled by Definition’, which gives disabled people a platform to convey their experiences.

Teifi is an extremely talented, helpful, reliable and creative student and her commitment to her studies, and the School, has been superb.

Teifi says “I am honoured and shocked to be shortlisted for The Dean’s Award. We all do what we do because we love it, but sometimes being recognised like this is more of a comfort to know that what we’re doing is right, and that others recognise that too. It’s that little nudge I need to keep pushing to get to where I have spent the last three (and more) years training and preparing to reach.”
