Hedgehog Awareness Week 2025: Thank You for Taking Part!

From creative crafts to community clean-ups, The British Hedgehog Preservation Society‘s Hedgehog Awareness Week 2025 has been a celebration of campus compassion, practical action and wildlife advocacy – and we couldn’t have done it without you.

This year’s theme, Give hedgehogs the edge, inspired us to reimagine the boundaries of our gardens and green spaces as wildlife havens. As a Platinum-accredited Hedgehog Friendly Campus, we’re proud to be part of the movement making a real difference.

Your Week in Action

The creative competition ran throughout the week, with students and staff submitting everything from poems to stories and photos. Your creativity not only raised awareness but inspired others to follow your lead.

Tuesday’s information stalls at Allerton and Clifford Whitworth Library were buzzing with curious passers-by eager to learn more about our spiky neighbours. Meanwhile, the Hedgehog Friendly Litter Pick in Peel Park brought together staff, students and local residents to help create a safer environment for hedgehogs and other wildlife.

On Wednesday, the Habitat Heaps session at David Lewis Playing Fields saw volunteers getting stuck in to build natural shelters that benefit hedgehogs, insects and other species. Log piles are particularly valuable as they provide shelter, nesting space, and a rich hunting ground for invertebrates – a key food source for hedgehogs. A simple yet act of care.

Thursday’s Hedgehog House Workshop was a hands-on highlight. Attendees used pre-cut materials at the Maker Space to build homes for hedgehogs – some to take home, others to place around campus. These homes will serve as lasting reminders of our shared responsibility to protect nature. Read how to make your own Hedgehog House here.

We wrapped up the week on Friday with our Tunnel Tour. Setting up monitoring tunnels around campus allows us to better understand hedgehog presence and behaviour, helping us tailor future conservation efforts.

Moving Forward

Our campus community has once again shown how collective action can make a tangible impact. Hedgehog Awareness Week 2025 might be over, but the work continues. Whether it’s creating a fence gap, picking up litter or just spreading the word, every effort counts.

Let’s keep giving hedgehogs the edge!
