We’re very happy to share that The University of Salford has once again been named a finalist in multiple categories at the Green Gown Awards, which celebrate outstanding sustainability initiatives in post-16 education.
We’re proud to be shortlisted in the following categories:
Next Generation Learning and Skills – Dr Dave Beck’s Environmental Justice module exemplifies Education for Sustainable Development. Using transformative pedagogy it equips social science students with the tools to understand and address the intersection between environmental issues and social inequality, using a Living Lab approach focused on real-world campus sustainability challenges. Feedback from students has shown they recognise the importance of environmental justice and the relevance to their professional and personal lives.

Student Sustainability Champion – Congratulations to Charlotte Stevenson-Stoddard, recognised for founding and leading the Saturday Club, a 15-week conservation education programme for 11–16-year-olds across Greater Manchester. Her hands-on curriculum fosters environmental awareness and broadens access to higher education.
Carbon 2030 – Our Net Zero Carbon Plan, aiming for net zero by 2038, has already cut Scope 1 and 2 emissions by over 70% since 2005/6. The strategy combines operational change with academic leadership and is now expanding to address Scope 3 emissions, which make up over 90% of our carbon footprint.

Professor Will Swan, Director of Sustainability at the University of Salford, said: “We’re delighted to once again celebrate our success in this year’s Green Gown Awards! Our continued recognition in these prestigious awards is a testament to the meaningful strides we’re making in sustainability across the university. This year’s finalist projects shine a spotlight on the inspiring efforts happening throughout our community—from innovative teaching and learning, to student-led initiatives, and sustainable developments on our campus.”
Winners will be announced at the awards ceremony which will take place Thursday 6 November at The Library of Birmingham.
