From Campus to Climate Action: How Students at the University of Salford Can Lead the Sustainability Movement

When I first stepped onto the University of Salford campus, I was buzzing with excitement—new beginnings, endless possibilities. But in the middle of academic goals and social experiences, one thing stood out: the realisation that we, as students, hold immense power to shape the future and sustainability is the heart of it.

If you’re a student at Salford, whether you’re into tech, business, fashion, biology, or just passionate about making a difference- this is your invitation to join a growing movement that’s about more than just saving the planet. It’s about building careers, communities, and a purpose-driven life.

The Small Steps That Spark Big Change

My journey into sustainability didn’t begin with a grand mission—it started with a simple litter pick on campus. Organised by the amazing Sustainability Team at the University of Salford, this event brought together students from all walks of life who just cared. No prior knowledge, no fancy titles just sleeves rolled up, conversations blooming, and a shared mission to clean and care for our shared spaces.

Four volunteers smiling and holding litter pickers, stood besides some bags of rubbish and a bin in Peel Park.

Picture this: getting your hands dirty planting herbs, laughing with classmates, and seeing the literal fruits of your labour grow. In a world of screen fatigue, this hands-on experience was refreshing and grounding. It reminded me that change begins at the roots—quite literally.

Ideas, Innovation, and Impact at Unhackathon

One of the most energising experiences was representing the University at the Manchester Unhackathon. Here students from across Greater Manchester came together to tackle real-world sustainability challenges using innovation, teamwork, and bold thinking. Imagine pitching solutions in front of experts and realising—you belong here.

It’s these kinds of opportunities that show you that sustainability isn’t just activism—it’s strategy, innovation, leadership, and a career path.

Campaigns with a Cause: Go Green Salford

The Go Green Salford Festival of Sustainability is a fantastic platform for students to plug into. From climate action to nature walks and awareness drives, it creates space for learning, action, and creativity. I’ve seen students make climate pledges, host nature walks, and build lasting friendships through these initiatives.

It’s more than a campaign. It’s a community—and once you’re in, you’ll wonder why you didn’t join sooner.

A Trip That Changed My Outlook: Student Sustainability Summit, Liverpool

Thanks to a fully funded opportunity from the University Sustainability Team, I had the privilege of attending the SOS-UK Student Sustainability Summit in Liverpool. This wasn’t just another event. It was a gathering of young environmental leaders from across the UK—sharing ideas, struggles, and visions for a sustainable world.

Students sat in groups on different tables working collaboratively at the Manchester Unhackathon.

I left that summit not just inspired but empowered. It made me realise we’re not just studying for degrees; we’re preparing to lead the world through one of its most critical transitions.
