Salford alumna Maudlyn Akosua Awuku tells us how a single call from Student Ambassador Qazeem Faniran sparked a life-changing friendship and professional alliance that continues to support her work as a women’s rights advocate.

How did you meet?

My journey at Salford began with a pivotal phone call from Qazeem, a Student Ambassador who would become an invaluable friend. While weighing university offers, Salford’s motto ‘Become Unstoppable’ resonated deeply with me. As an international student from Ghana, I needed more than just academic excellence—I needed a supportive environment. Qazeem provided exactly that, addressing all my concerns about university life, accommodation, and opportunities with genuine care and insight. His guidance was so impactful that it inspired me to follow in his footsteps and become a Student Ambassador. Despite starting my studies during challenging COVID-19 times, Qazeem’s mentorship helped me navigate university life seamlessly.

Tell us about your friendship after uni

Our connection has evolved into a powerful professional and personal alliance. Our mutual support has led to remarkable achievements—I won the Rising Star in the Alumni Achievement Awards in 2023, following his nomination, and he secured the same honour in 2024 through my nomination. Today, we’re expanding our impact together, with Qazeem serving as a trustee for my Ghanaian women’s rights charity, Anijie Global Foundation, as we extend operations to the UK.

What is your advice for making friends on campus?

Be open to unexpected connections—they might become life-changing relationships. Engage with Student Ambassadors and university programs, as these networks often lead to meaningful friendships. Remember that the strongest bonds often start with a simple conversation or shared goal. Don’t limit yourself to just your course mates; some of the most valuable friendships can cross academic and cultural boundaries.

Thank you to Maudlyn and Qazeem for sharing your inspirational story of friendship!

‘How We Met’ celebrates the lifelong connections you made at Salford—whether that’s friendships, romance, or mentors who made a real difference.
