Biochemistry students in the lab

Having started at the University of Salford not knowing what to study, Gwyn, 19, decided to start out with studying a Foundation Year in Human Biology and Infectious Diseases. Deciding to study her Foundation Year allowed her to make the decision to move onto studying Biochemistry. Read on to hear her story all about studying a Foundation Year.

Hi Gwyn! Could you tell us a little bit about why you decided to study a Foundation Year?

I wasn’t too sure what course I wanted to do however I knew that I wanted to do something involving science. By doing a Foundation Year, it gave me a chance to have a look at all the other courses I could choose from.

How would you explain what you did while studying your Foundation Year?

I had lectures for all my modules and had a lab session every other week. I was assessed through a different number of ways such as essays, multiple choice tests, lab reports, and presentations. I found this beneficial as now, as a first year, I can do my assignments more efficiently, know how to approach them, and know what is expected from me.

What did you learn on the course? Was there anything you particularly enjoyed doing?

I had lectures for all my modules. My favourite module was definitely the Chemistry module. My lecturer was very interactive with us during the lectures which made learning the content so easy. I also loved being in the lab. Having lab sessions helped me make my mind up that I wanted to do something like that as a career and the experiments that I did were so fun!

Did you have a highlight when studying your Foundation Year?

Definitely meeting other people on the foundation year! Meeting them gave me so much insight into what their courses were like and what they were learning. It allowed me to decide on if I wanted to continue onto my course or switch to something else. Another highlight was settling in so quickly. I met my friends at the start of the year, during induction week, and they made the transition into university life so easy! We stuck together for the entirety of our foundation year and we are still friends to this day even though we don’t do the same course.

What surprised you most when studying your Foundation Year?

The amount of people studying a Foundation Year surprised me. It showed me that I wasn’t alone and that we are all on the same boat as each other. I was able to relate to people and hear their stories as to why they were on the Foundation Year.

Did you have any worries starting a Foundation Year and, if so, what helped once you started?

I was very worried about the social aspect – I was worried that I wouldn’t fit in or find a friend group however that was not the case. Meeting my friends during induction week helped me settle in quickly.

What advice would you give to someone studying a Foundation Year course?

Do not be afraid about studying a Foundation Year! I know it is easier said than done however a Foundation Year is nothing to be worried about! Everyone, from friends to lecturers to tutors are there to help you when you need it. Also, attend induction week! You can meet your module leaders, lecturers, and get to know other people on your course.
