The School of Health Sciences has recently signed a collaboration agreement with the newly-formed Manchester Institute of Health and Performance (MIHP), supporting the facility with both new and existing staff.
The Institute’s brand new home opened in January 2016 and was developed through an £18m investment from partners Manchester City Council, Sports England and City Football Group. It is the first of its kind in the UK, providing multi-disciplinary diagnostics, education, research and development.
The new sports health and science research facility will be operated by HCA Healthcare UK, an organisation which also runs the Institute of Sports Exercise and Health – one of only nine International Olympic Committee research centres worldwide, specialising in the prevention of injury and protection of athlete health – and other private facilities across the UK, including joint ventures here in Greater Manchester, such as The Christie Clinic and The Wilmslow Hospital.
Senior Lecturer in the School of Health Science, Professor Richard Jones is Salford’s clinical biomechanics lead at the MIHP and has been involved in its planning and development.
Richard said: “The relationship with Manchester Institute of Health and Performance will enable the School of Health Sciences and the wider University to collaboratively attract greater opportunities within both elite sports and also health contexts. This speaks directly to our new vision and our strategic priority to develop Industry Collaboration Zones. The knowledge and experience within our School will help the Institute strengthen its international reputation as a world-class sports medicine facility and will allow unprecedented research to be carried out, demonstrating Salford’s commitment to the REF2020 and enhancing healthcare in Greater Manchester’.
Professor Jones added: “The Institute will offer fantastic opportunities for growth in the area of sports medicine and health at the University and provide unique experiences for our students, further enhancing our reputation in healthcare research and provision’.
