Thanks to our Graduate Interns

For three months Graduate Interns Ansar Ali, Assad Mahmood and Jasi Ahmed have worked with the Environmental Sustainability Team, supporting us with various activities, in particular the events for Go Green Salford. We would like to thank them for all of their hard work and enthusiasm, as well as the fresh ideas they have brought to the team. Before they left we asked them to tell us about their experience with us, their interests and what they hope to do in the future.

Hello, I’m Ansar. I studied Business and Tourism Management and during my internship I worked with the Environmental Sustainability Team as a Sustainable Travel Assistant. My role was to update all relevant travel data on campus and to encourage more sustainable methods of travel to university. At the same time, I worked closely with the delivery of events related to Go Green Salford, and helped with the communication process of the activities involved. read more

Blackout 2017

On Friday 10th March staff and students gathered together to take part in the National Union of Students’ Blackout campaign. After a brief training session and donning their Blackout t-shirts, the volunteers split into teams and went to audit non-essential lights and equipment in their allocated areas. The teams noted down the total number of each type of equipment and the number left on unnecessarily, whilst also switching off certain items such as lights and computer monitors.

Over the evening the volunteers audited Maxwell, Gilbert Rooms, Peel, Newton, Allerton, Crescent House and The Old Fire Station. If you work in one of these buildings you may have found a note on your desk or under your door thanking you for switching off or reminding you to power down at the end of the day. After the audits the teams returned to Atmosphere café where they were rewarded for their efforts with pizzas and drinks. read more

We Sat Down to Stand Up for Farmers and #Fairtrade!

The thin months, the months of the big stomach, the times of silence – these are just some of the ways the farmers behind our breakfast describe the times of the year when they struggle to feed themselves and their families. Image

Millions of farmers and workers in developing countries are going hungry, missing meals or, worse, facing a year-round struggle to get enough food to eat, despite working long hours to provide for our breakfasts. This is why this year the Fairtrade Foundation had the theme for Fairtrade Fortnight of Sit Down for Breakfast, Stand Up for Farmers.
Seasonal hunger is common to coffee and cocoa farmers who harvest once or twice a year and have to make the money last until the next harvest. That’s to keep a family fed, clothed, housed, educated and healthy. On banana and tea plantations, poor pay leaves them with hunger throughout the year. Malnourishment, stunting, illness and infant mortality can be brutal realities when there isn’t enough food. read more
