Mariam Mahmood Perveen shares her experience studying BSc Business Management at the University of Salford – from why she chose the course to how it prepared her for a successful role in HR. Her story offers valuable insights for future students looking to make the most of their time at university.

Journey to the University of Salford

I chose to study Business Management at the University of Salford because of the wide range of career paths it opens up. When I attended open days at Salford, I had the opportunity to speak with lecturers who explained the courses in detail. Their insights and enthusiasm made a strong impression on me and sparked a genuine interest in pursuing my studies at the University of Salford.

The University offers a dedicated business school space where you can go for help or simply to chat, which creates a great sense of community and provides a learning environment where you can build your communication skills.

While at the University of Salford, I had the chance to be a course representative—one of the key opportunities that boosted my employability skills. In this role, I was able to drive positive changes within the course, acting as a voice for students if they had concerns. I also took part in wider meetings to discuss events or charity fairs to encourage engagement.

The role gave me the opportunity to support students who had concerns or wanted to give positive feedback to help improve the course further. Along the way, I also took part in skills development sessions to enhance my abilities in communication, leadership, and teamwork—essential skills in the workplace. These experiences helped prepare me for the tasks and projects I now handle in a real-world professional environment.

Now, having studied the course, I can confidently say that I made the right decision to study at Salford. The programme has given me a comprehensive understanding of key areas such as Human Resources, Marketing, and Business Simulation, which help develop your skills and prepare you for a career in your chosen field.

Life After Salford: My Graduate Job in HR

I now work at the headquarters of the Co-operative Group in the HR & Payroll department as an HR Services Advisor. My role involves supporting the internal side of the business, helping me understand how the company manages colleagues, stakeholders, and suppliers.

I provide support to colleagues with matters such as career breaks, maternity, loans, and group income protection—offering help when colleagues are unable to work for a certain period. I also work on reports to maintain ongoing relationships with suppliers.

I was able to secure this role because of the knowledge I gained at university in areas such as Human Resources and Marketing. This not only gave me confidence but also a deeper understanding of how businesses operate internally.
