Professor Philip Brown appointed Director of Centre for Nursing, Midwifery, Social Work & Social Sciences Research

Phil-BrownProfessor Philip Brown has been appointed Director for Nursing, Midwifery, Social Work & Social Sciences Research at the University of Salford. In his new role, Philip will be responsible for operationalising the School of Nursing, Midwifery, Social Work & Social Sciences’ research plans, with a specific focus on projects, publications and professional development. He will also continue in his role as Director of the Sustainable Housing & Urban Studies Unit (SHUSU).

Commenting on his new role, Philip said ‘This is an exciting time to be involved in research at the University of Salford. The School of Nursing, Midwifery, Social Work & Social Sciences is home to world-leading research across a number of fields. As well as obvious talent and expertise there is abundant enthusiasm and passion for making the research that is undertaken within the University matter for policy, people and place. I am proud to play a part in helping realise this ambition.’


Philip first joined the University of Salford in 2005 as a Research Fellow and became Director of SHUSU in 2012, having previously worked at the University of Huddersfield and Leeds City Council. He has led and delivered a wide range of projects for the private and public sector, charitable bodies and European Commission. He has broad research experience having worked in fields as diverse as Roma inclusion, migration, homelessness, fuel poverty, energy efficiency and regeneration. Philip is a Chartered Psychologist of the British Psychological Society and was a member of the Economic and Social Research Council’s (ESRC) Peer Review College from 2010-2015. He has redeveloped the University’s Making Research Count initiative and, along with Dr Anya Ahmed, he leads the University’s Housing@Salford initiative which aims to provide knowledge sharing and network opportunities to the social housing sector in the north of England.
